Newton verses Huygen
When Huygen first suggested his wave theory of light it was rejected in favour of Newton's corpuscular theory because:
- Newton was a more eminent scientist.
- It was not possible to measure the speed of light and determine whether it was faster or slower in a more optically dense medium
- Wave theory was considered in terms of longitudinal waves so polarisation could not be explained
